The deep culture of the territory is the secret of Fiegl

The Fiegl family has cultivated vine since 1782.At that time, Valentino Fiegl signed the buying contract of a vineyard called “Meja”. In the last years the Fiegl family has done big investments in the vineyard and in the cellar in order to raise the quality of their products.

The brothers Alessio Giuseppe and Rinaldo decided to consolidate this way of operating, which creates vines able to exalt extremely well the organolectic features of the Collio grounds.These soils are very difficult to cultivate but they are full of mineral salts and they can transmit very rare vines in the world. The aim is to conserve this features obtained with hard work in the vineyard and exalt the specialty of that ground. Also in the cellar the vine maturation phases are assisted by technological innovations and respecting traditions.

The merit of the firm continuous evolution goes also to the young Martin Robert and Matej Fiegl, who finished the oenology studies and contributed with passion and enthusiasm many innovations to all production phases: in this way they could evaluate even more the grapes and Fiegl vine. The Fiegl family is tied to its roots and to the ground, specially to the Oslavia one.

The aim of Fiegl vines is to transmit this “terroir” inside a vine glass.

These soils are very difficult to cultivate but they are full of mineral salts and they can transmit very rare vines in the world.

The vineyards are wide 30 hectars with in average 500 plants pro hectar. Almost all of the cultivating operations are done manually in order to guarantee a high quality of the grapes produced. They produce grapes for 1-1.5kg pro plant.

All is done respecting the environment and using some eco-compatible products and a totally grass covered ground. The aim of the country is to obtain a reduced production, which exalts the “terroir”, expressed by the cru of Oslavia.

Oslavia Love for Wine

With its 150 inhabitants, Oslavia sits on the Eastern hillsides of the Collio. Its name evokes contradictory feelings, and it is related to the cruelty of World War 1, but also to the well-known Nectar of the Gods – wine. This border area is rich in history and in wine and food traditions. And this is apparent as soon as you reach the entrance to the village, where a bilingual sign indicates the presence of the Slovenian minority and the proximity of the border, only 200 metres to the east. If you carry on down the road, your attention will be caught by a huge monument in white marble, the Sacrario di Oslavia (Oslavia’s Memorial Monument), that Mussolini had built to commemorate the thousands of Italian soldiers who died in World War 1.

Each evening, the ‘chiara’ bell tolls in honour of the dead soldiers.

Once we have left behind the cruelty of the war, we can fully enjoy the splendid Collio landscape that shows itself before our eyes in all its beauty. The presence of the numerous vineyards lets us sense the special link that exists between farmer and land, and the mutual respect that has existed for centuries. The windy microclimate and the right temperatures are ideal for growing vines – and this is also compounded by the type of soil known as PONKA, which is made of arenaceous and marnose sediments dating back from the Eocene era. The best expression of this bond is definitely the wine, which reflects several generations’ passion, tradition and dedication.

Ribolla Gialla is the wine that expresses this poem more than any others. In a glass – as simple as these people, and at the same time as deep as the history of this corner of Italy, suspended between sea and mountains, between past and future, with a strong personality and individuality, that fascinates you from breath to breath.
